Exploring Convention

Conventions are systems of signs,  the elements within which help create meaning. There are two types of conventions used within genre; Technical and Symbolic. 

Technical codes is how meaning is conveyed through the use of the technical equipment, for example Camera work, Editing and Sound. 

Symbolic codes can show what is beneath the surface i.e the Mise-en-scene (The Costume, Props, Location/Setting, Lighting, Character Positioning and Facial Expressions).

One reason behind the use of Conventions and codes is mostly for the audiences recognition, as it can help the audience to become familiar with the certain genre and help avoid any disappointment after consuming the product.
